Shaping the Next Generation of "Mitsubishi Motors Identity" with Diverse Colleagues: The Passion of an Interior Design Manager from Overseas
Ali Khajuee joined Mitsubishi Motors in 2021 and currently works as an Interior Design Manager. After gaining a wide range of design experience in his home country of Iran, he moved to Japan, where he has worked on both interior and exterior car design. Under the theme "Connect," Khajuee promotes cross-functional collaboration. Here, he talks about his passion for design and the joy of his work.
Exchanging Ideas Across Departments under the Banner of "Connect": How Diversity Expands Design Possibilities
The interior design team designs spaces where passengers can spend their time comfortably and safely. As a design manager, Khajuee makes a conscious effort to build diverse teams for this purpose.
"Depending on the vehicle concept and the target generation, we put together the best possible team by bringing in both young and veteran designers. What I always keep in mind during this process is diversity. By combining members of different ages, nationalities, and backgrounds to engage in multi-faceted discussions, we can achieve better designs and cultivate better designers."
With many members from overseas on the team, Khajuee flexibly switches languages depending on who he is speaking with to ensure smooth communication.
"If the other person is Japanese, I try to speak in Japanese. I believe that learning Japanese leads to a deeper understanding of culture and the daily lives of our Japanese users. Of course, since our workplace is a global environment, I also encourage Japanese members to learn English. Having this mutual attitude of trying to understand each other's cultures is crucial for bringing out the best in teamwork."
Interior design, crafted by a global team incorporating diverse perspectives, requires not only visual appeal but also great experiences, such as comfort and sense of confidence and control.
"While exterior design shapes what is seen from the outside, interior design creates the indoor space. Unlike exterior design, where it is very important to control the overall proportions and attitude of the car from a distance, interior design is characterized by its close proximity to humans. You design the space while actually sitting in the seats, checking textures, and experiencing it up-close.
I have also experienced exterior design in the past, and there is a possibility I will be in charge of a different design domain in the future. I think it is important to have a mindset of being a “Designer”, without being bound by specific fields."
While conveying the ideal mindset of a designer to his team, Khajuee champions "Connect" as his managerial keyword.
"In the past, it was not uncommon for projects to move forward with exterior, interior, and color design operating individually. Therefore, with 'Connect' as our keyword, I gather members from each domain from the early stages of development to hold discussions. To enhance the overall experience of our vehicles, I want us to tackle design as 'One Team' across departments."
From Disaster Prevention Research to the Automotive World: The Essence of Design Remains Unchanged Across Domains
Khajuee studied industrial design with a focus on disaster prevention in graduate school in Iran, where he earned his first master's degree. After graduating, he worked on a wide range of design fields in his home country.
"In addition to product design for smartphone concepts and home appliances, I experienced brand identity design, storyboarding for TV commercials, and user experience (UX) design for websites and many more design fields. This became my foundation as a designer.
It helped me develop an approach where I don't just think of design in terms of shape, but also pursue UX—asking what kind of experience it brings and whether the interface is easy to use."
Later, his passion for the research he had done at graduate school in Iran resurfaced, leading Khajuee to decide to study abroad in Japan, a country advanced in disaster prevention technology. While pursuing his second master`s degree in product design, he became interested in the automotive world.
"It is often said that design is a job of solving problems, but I think of it as a job of creating questions. We observe the world, first raise a question, and then find an answer to it. That process is exactly the same for any product from disaster prevention goods to cars. While continuing my research at Kobe Design University's graduate school, I happened to experience an internship at a car manufacturer, which led me to fall in love with car design."
After completing graduate school, he job-hunted in Japan and worked at a design firm for an automotive manufacturer for six years. During that time, a new goal gradually began to take shape.
"At the design company, I was involved in a wide range of projects from car interiors to exteriors, which honed my skills as a designer. In the midst of this, I began thinking about changing jobs because of a strong desire to interact directly with engineering departments and oversee projects until they became final products.
I felt that Mitsubishi Motors was the place where I could fulfill that desire. I was attracted to the fact that they not only have many foreign employees but also have them active in management positions, demonstrating a commitment to promoting diversity. Once I joined, I found an environment where performance is evaluated fairly regardless of nationality, and I was able to earn a promotion to manager. "
Uniting Differing Opinions to Realize the Design Vision: A Relentless Commitment to "Mitsubishi-ness"
Since joining Mitsubishi Motors, Khajuee has worked on various projects. One that stands out in his mind was the "Destinator" SUV, which featured an audio system co-developed with Yamaha.
"One of the key features of this car is that it is equipped with the 'Dynamic Sound Yamaha Premium' audio system, which we co-developed with Yamaha. To visually express our thorough commitment to sound, I proposed a distinctive design where the door speakers are angled to face the passengers.
However, realizing this required overcoming many hurdles. Some members prioritized sound quality, while others put the door structure first, making it very difficult to reach a consensus."
With the team divided, Khajuee, as a designer, took on the role of achieving the right balance.
"Because everyone on the team was doing their best in their respective fields, aligning all those opinions was extremely challenging. As a designer, instead of just shaping the given requirements, I thoroughly pursued what the purpose was and how we could better express 'Mitsubishi-ness' through that design. After persistently working with the engineering team and the experts from Yamaha, we were able to find the right balance for the design of the door speakers."
Discussing ideas directly with engineering departments and partner companies to turn them into final products was exactly what Khajuee wanted to achieve when he changed jobs.
"In the development of the 'Destinator,' we were able to bring a novel idea to fruition without losing the design intention. This was possible precisely because we were at the headquarters. Our job is not just to style over engineering requirements. It is vital to deeply grasp the intent behind those requirements and derive an answer that is uniquely Mitsubishi."
Khajuee believes that the "Mitsubishi-ness" he pursues does not lie on a simple extension of the past, but is something to be newly created.
"Our mission is to fully understand the 'Mitsubishi-ness' built up so far, and then create a 'future Mitsubishi-ness' that no one has ever seen before. I tell the younger members of the team, 'I want you to come up with designs that we as your more experienced senior colleagues would never think of.' While I still have many things I want to achieve myself as a designer, supporting and empowering young designers to bring their ideas to life is my greatest joy as a manager."
Connecting the Entire Company Beyond Departments: Driven by Passion to Create Better Experiences
Khajuee says his future goal is to not only connect the design departments horizontally but to "connect" the entire company as one team to strive for better products and experiences. He says that the scale of Mitsubishi Motors is ideal for achieving this.
"Mitsubishi Motors is an ideally sized organization for designers—not too big, but not small either. Because the distance between departments is close, we can maintain close communication. Working in collaboration with members from various fields such as interior, exterior, CMF (Color/Material/Finish), and UI/UX naturally hones one's comprehensive abilities as a designer."
Furthermore, another appeal is the ability to work with a healthy work-life balance while sharpening design skills.
"To create better design, it doesn't mean you just have to keep working long hours. There are times to focus and work hard on your design, and times to create some distance and maybe visit museums or art galleries to get new inspiration. In that way, it is important to balance input and output according to the waves of the project. I tell my team members to rest properly when it's time to rest and to seek inspiration outside of work. But there are times to focus and persevere through.
Being a designer is a job that requires creativity and skills, but above all, what matters most is passion. I love working with people who have a strong desire to create something new. I consider myself a highly passionate person. I think about design 24/7. Working with a manager like me is exciting and a lot of fun (laughs)."
To future colleagues who share the same desire to passionately pursue better design and enjoy their work, Khajuee sends this message:
"In this day and age, the speed of change is faster than ever. Humans naturally tend to fear change, but what future designers need is a mindset to create changes themselves, without being bound by the past. Instead of fearing change, we look forward to working with those who want to create the future of cars and a brand-new Mitsubishi Motors with us."
Without being bound by conventional thinking, aiming for exciting designs—with his passion burning bright, Khajuee will continue to create the future of "Mitsubishi-ness" together with his colleagues.
